Description

Peento or South China Saucer is a low chill, flat, freestone white fleshed peach. It was introduced to the U.S. in 1869 by P.J. Berckmans, Augusta, GA. It is of fair quality with somewhat acid taste and is susceptible to bacterial spot. It requires 450 chill hours. It has an uneven shape and cracks on the bottom. Picking often tears flesh at the stem. This name also refers to a group of flat peaches originally from China, many of which have low-acid flavor. The name means flat peach in Chinese. At one time this name was also applied to descendants of a very low-chilling flat peach that was well adapted to Florida and that included some nonflat types.
