Description

CaroTiger was officially released by Clemson University on June 4, 2012, by Desmond R. Layne. The initial cross was made by D.W. Cain. It was selected by W.C. Newall, Jr. in 1982. Male (pollen) parent was a selection at Michigan State University (MSU57202-002). Female parent was Parade. CaroTiger was formerly tested as SC82035-13-48. It is named following the previous series of peaches released from Clemson University (Carored, Caroking, and Carogem) where the "Caro" prefix designates South Carolina. The "Tiger" refers to the Clemson University mascot. The "Caro" series of cultivars are well established in the southeastern U.S. peach industry. CaroTiger is a late season, melting flesh, yellow-fleshed cultivar that typically ripens in late August in South Carolina. It requires approximately 800-850 hours below 45F to overcome dormancy. It blooms with Parade and about 4 days before Redhaven or Big Red. It has nonshowy bloom and reniform leaf glands. The fruit development period is about 152 days in Seneca, SC. It is typically harvested a few days after Flameprince and a few days before Parade in most years. Fruit are globose with a fairly prominent suture. Average size of fruit for properly thinned trees exceeds 3 inches in diameter. Skin has a very attractive yellow/orange background color with nice red blush at harvest. Fruit has normal acidity with soluble solids concentration (brix) ranging from 11-15 at harvest. It has excellent eating qualities and is suitable for both roadside marketing and commercial shipping.
