Description

The Agricultural Research Service, United States Department of Agriculture, announces the release for propagation of the new peach cultivar GALAXY, formerly tested as Y142-130. This cultivar provides a mid-season (oblate) peento shaped peach with white flesh, low acid and sweet taste for the fresh market. GALAXY resulted from the cross P34-106 x D33-1 made in 1994. P34-106 =[P51-138 OP = {Armking x P59-94 =(Firebrite x Sunfre)}]. D33-1 is a white peento peach with a complex parentage, developed by Fred Hough and Joe Goffreda, Rutgers University, New Brunswick, New Jersey. It is heterozygous for yellow flesh and nectarine. The original seedling was planted in 1995 at the San Joaquin Valley Agricultural Sciences Center, Parlier, California. It is from a population of 114 seedlings developed by embryo culture and was selected in 1995 by David W. Ramming. GALAXY has been tested in the San Joaquin Valley of California. GALAXY ripens the third to fourth week of June, with Saturn. The oblate fruit is medium to large in size. The fruit averages 8.3 centimeters (3 3/4 inches) in diameter and 142 grams (3.2 fruit per pound). It is larger than Saturn, which averaged 6.7 centimeters (2 5/8 inches) in diameter and 86 grams (5.3 fruit per pound). Production has been good and averaged 53.3 kilograms per tree compared to 50.9 kilograms for Saturn. The flesh is a clear white and firm with melting texture. At shipping maturity, GALAXY has low acid and sweet tasting flesh. The flesh clings to the pit. The skin color is white with 50-60% red blush. GALAXY is early blooming and blooms with Crimson Baby nectarine or about 6 days before Springcrest at Parlier, Calif. Flowers are non-showy and self-fertile. Leaf glands are globose. Trees of GALAXY are vigorous. GALAXY was indexed by NRSP5 Virus-Tested Fruit Tree Collection, Irrigated Agriculture Research and Extension Center, Washington State University, 24106 N. Bunn Road, Prosser, WA 99350 and found to be free of known viruses. Certified virus-indexed propagation material is available from NRSP. Genetic material of this release will be deposited in the National Plant Germplasm System where it will be available for research purposes, including development and commercialization of new cultivars. It is requested that appropriate recognition be made if this germplasm contributes to the development of a new breeding line or cultivar. The Agricultural Research Service has no plants of GALAXY available for distribution. Limited quantities of budwood may be obtained by writing David W. Ramming, USDA, Agricultural Research Service, 9611 South Riverbend Avenue, Parlier, CA 93648.

Key

  • Evaluations are based on a 1-8 scale (6=OK,7=Commercially acceptable, 8=Excellent)
  • Size is in inches
  • Shape: round is assumed, T=tip, P=point, S=suture, OB=oblate, OV=ovate
  • Pubescence: 10=nectarine
  • Blush: presented as percentage of ground color cover with red or similar
  • Freeness: 3=early cling, 8=completely free
  • Status: 0=discard, 1=keep
  • Notes: SOS=soft on suture, SOT=soft on tip, RIF=red in flesh, GAS=green around stem
  • RAP=red around pit, GGC=green ground color, sz=size, wh=white, yt=young tree, CCT=concave tip
  • Bloom date is when approx. 90% of blooms are open (full bloom)

The description of each variety of peach or nectarine fruit under each group is in different formats as this information is collected from varied sources and hence is not consistent
